What the altitude actually changes

Denver is at 5,280 feet, and the first two weeks are a real adjustment rather than a slogan.

Expect to be short of breath on stairs, to sleep poorly for a few nights, and to need noticeably more water. Alcohol hits harder. Sunburn happens faster, in winter as well as summer.

On move day it matters concretely: carrying boxes up two flights is harder than it is at sea level, for you and for the crew. If you are moving yourself, plan more breaks and more time than you would in California.

Neighborhoods, and what each means for a move

LoDo, RiNo, Union Station. Lofts and new mid-rises. Freight elevators, loading docks, reserved move windows, certificates of insurance. Book two weeks out.

Capitol Hill and Cheesman Park. Older apartment buildings and Victorians, many without elevators. Stair carries are the norm; tell your mover the flight count.

Washington Park, Platt Park, Baker. Bungalows on grid streets. Alley access is common in Denver and often easier for a truck than the street frontage.

Highlands and Berkeley. Older homes mixed with new duplexes, narrow streets, competitive market.

Stapleton/Central Park, Green Valley Ranch. Newer, planned, wide streets, garages — the easiest access in the city.

Suburbs — Lakewood, Aurora, Arvada, Littleton. More space per dollar, usually a garage, sometimes HOA rules on move hours.

Cost of living beyond housing

• Heating is the seasonal cost Californians are not used to. Winters are cold, and an older house with poor insulation shows it on the bill.
• Income tax. Colorado uses a flat rate, well below California’s top brackets.
• Property tax rates are relatively low, though assessments have moved with the market.
• Car costs. Registration is based on vehicle value and can be higher than expected in the first year. Winter tires are a real expense.
• Groceries and services run close to national averages — noticeably cheaper than coastal California.

Weather, and the winter move problem

Denver gets around 300 sunny days a year and also gets substantial snow. Both are true, because storms clear fast.

The consequence for a move is timing risk. A March blizzard — March is the snowiest month, not January — can close I-70 and delay an inbound truck. If you are moving in winter, build slack into the delivery window and expect it to be a range rather than a date.

On the day, snow and salt mean floor protection at both ends, plastic covers on upholstered furniture, and boxes that never sit on a wet driveway.

The California-to-Colorado move
