Sorting, in the Order That Works
The single most useful thing anyone can do is start with the new floor plan rather than with the old house. Measure the new rooms, decide what physically fits, and let that do most of the deciding for you. Then work through the house in this order, because it runs from easy to hard and builds momentum rather than exhausting it on day one.

Four categories, not two
"Keep or throw away" is too blunt and it stalls people. Four works better: goes to the new home, goes to family, is sold or donated, is disposed of. Anything genuinely undecided goes into a fifth pile that is revisited once — not left to be argued about on moving day.
Two practical notes. Furniture going to family is easier to move while the crew is already there and the truck is already loaded — plan those drops in advance so they are an extra stop rather than a separate job. And items being sold or donated should leave the house before the move, not on the day: a crew cannot wait for a charity pickup.
What that means in practice. Packing and unpacking are billed at the same hourly rate as the move itself rather than as a separate service, and cartons and packing paper are not charged. A piano, a safe or oversized art needs more hands rather than a specialty fee — the crew changes, so the rate does: $175 an hour for two movers, $270 an hour for a crew of four. Extra stops to drop furniture with family add time at that same rate, with no flat surcharge.
Seniors receive a 5% discount. Appliances have to be disconnected and drained before the crew arrives — Halo does not disconnect or reconnect gas, water or electrical appliances. A certificate of insurance for a community or building is issued on request at no charge, and Halo books a three-hour minimum.
Moving Day, and the First Night
Two things make the difference between a move that is tiring and one that is distressing, and neither costs anything.
Beds first
Halo loads so that the bedroom comes off the truck early and goes up early. On any move that matters this is the right order; on a senior move it is close to essential. Nobody should be waiting on a bed at nine in the evening.
The first-night box
One box, packed last, carried in the car rather than on the truck: bedding, towels, toiletries, medication with its list, phone chargers, a kettle or coffee, a change of clothes, glasses, remote controls, and the documents folder. It removes the worst hour of any move — the one spent looking for a toothbrush among sixty identical boxes.
What should never go on the truck
- Medication, prescriptions and the medication list
- Passports, ID, deeds, wills, insurance and financial paperwork
- Jewellery, small valuables and anything irreplaceable
- House keys, hearing aids, glasses and chargers
- Photographs already sorted for keeping
Flammables, corrosives, pressurized cylinders, paint, propane and perishables cannot travel at all, and the crew will say so at the door rather than at the curb.
