What a Low Quote Usually Hides

Some quotes are lower because the company is leaner. Others are lower because the number you were given was never the number you were going to pay. The cheapest move is not the lowest quote. It is the lowest final invoice, and the Not To Exceed price is the only figure that binds anyone to anything.

Why the Hourly Rate Is Not the Price

On an hourly job the invoice is the rate multiplied by the hours, and the hours are set by the crew size, the equipment and how ready the home is. A slightly lower rate with a crew that takes three hours longer produces a bigger bill, and a crew that is too small for the job is the most reliable way to turn a cheap rate into an expensive day. So when you compare quotes, compare four things rather than one:

• The hourly rate, and how many movers and trucks it actually covers.
• The Not To Exceed price — the maximum for the agreed work.
• Any minimum, billing increment and travel rule, which are stated in your booking documents.
• What is included in the rate versus quoted as its own line — the list further down this page is there so you can hold it against anyone else's.

What is the single biggest way to spend less?

Is a $355 parking permit really worth it?

My quote says "fully insured". Am I covered?

Not in the way that phrase suggests. Basic liability is 60 cents per pound per article and is built into every mover's rate. It pays by weight, so a 25-pound television is covered for about $15. It is a liability limit, not insurance. If something matters more than it weighs, ask for a higher valuation to be elected in your move documents.

What should I do if a mover asks for cash before the job?
