The short answer
Split the closet three ways and each part gets a different container. Hanging clothes go straight into wardrobe boxes on the rail. Folded clothes can stay in dresser drawers if the dresser is light enough to carry loaded. Everything else gets rolled into large boxes or suitcases.
The mistakes that cost you are all avoidable:
- vacuum bags for anything with structure — suits, wool coats, down jackets — which come out permanently creased or flattened;
- heavy boxes of clothing, which is the easiest thing in the house to overpack;
- packing anything damp, which is how a box of laundry arrives smelling of mildew;
- leaving the next two days of clothes somewhere on the truck.
